LUCKNOW: Aligarh Muslim University vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor appealed students to maintain peace and focus on studies as the final exams of the current session were scheduled to begin on May 12.
In the appeal, which was circulated to all the students room by room, Mansoor cautioned the agitating students against falling into the trap of all those forces which were trying to malign the image of the institution.
“We should not fall in the trap of some forces which are bent on destroying the image of our alma mater and playing with our bright future,” he said, advising the students not to lower the guard and let their studies suffer at the time of exams.
Accepting that the AMU was passing through ‘trying’ times, Mansoor called upon the students to have a rational response to the present crisis and thoughtful action without getting swayed by emotions.
The vice-chancellor said he shared pain and agony of students and also endorsed their demand of a judicial inquiry into the last Wednesday clashes and the subsequent police action on university students.
Mansoor, however, took a swipe on media, especially news channels, which, he claimed, were armed with half-truth information of the ongoing crisis and trying to paint the negative picture of the institution. The vice-chancellor asked the students to be cautious of such elements.
Meanwhile, the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) is believed to have submitted a report to the district administration on the ongoing controversy over Jinnah’s portrait and students’ protest. In another report, the police is reported to have justified the police action following the clashes. Also, the Dargah Aala Hazrat of Bareilvi Muslim sect issued a fatwa directing the Muslim community in India not to support Mohammed Ali Jinnah.
