The Delhi-NCR areas witnessed a sudden change of weather on Wednesday afternoon with dark clouds appearing in the sky accompanied by a drizzle as the weather office issued a warning of 50-60 kmph winds hitting the region.

The Met office said, “strong winds and rains are expected to hit Delhi and nearby areas of Jhajjar, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Hodal & Palwal in the next few hours,” a Met official said.

The weather office warned people to exercise caution and not expose themselves to the inclement weather.

Delhiites woke up to a cloudy morning on Wednesday, after parts of the national capital witnessed dust storm coupled with light rains last night. But, most of Wednesday was largely dry and sunny.

Western disturbances have caused widespread dust storms and thunderstorms in large parts of north India. Similar weather conditions have been prevailing across various parts of the country, including several spells of dust storms over the last few days.

On May 2, more than 125 people were killed during dust storms and lightning strikes that hit parts of north and west India.

Last week, the Met office had predicted that “thunderstorm and squall” would hit parts of north India between May 3 and 9 but the weather disturbance seems to have petered out.

Following the Met warning, Delhi and adjoining states had announced several precautionary measures, including shutting of schools.
