Railway slaps Rs 1-lakh fine on contractor for storing water bottles in toilet

More than a week after a video in which catering staff using a toilet of a Garib Rath train for storage of coffee, tea, water bottles and cold drinks went viral across the country, the Western Railway on Tuesday slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the contractor and initiated proceedings to sack the firm from service.

The incident had come to light after a video of using a toilet of the handicapped persons’ coach on Mumbai-Nizamuddin Garib Rath Express No. 12909 storage of water bottles and cold drinks on April 26, 2018 went viral in the social media.

Having taken the matter seriously and imposing a fine of Rs 1 lakh  on the contractor M/s Krishna Enterprises, the Western Railway asked the IRCTC for further disciplinary action against the contractor concerned.

After the video that had gone viral on social media showed the staffers of Messrs. Krishna Enterprises, Bandra, Mumbai storing tea, coffee, soft drinks and others in the train toilet before serving them to the passengers, the Western Railway had launched investigations into the matter. “Apart from imposing fine, a show cause notice has also been served to the contractor of the train for termination of the contract by the IRCTC.
