Angela Davidson moved from Zimbabwe to Christchurch about 12 years ago with her partner and three children.

A driver who failed to give way at a intersection killed a Canterbury mother who was driving to collect her son from a rugby match.

Angela Davidson, 44, died in Christchurch Hospital late on Saturday night after the collision at the intersection of Volckman and Drain roads, near Doyleston and Leeston, at 9.44am that day.

It is understood the male driver of the other car failed to give way at the intersection and crashed into the mother-of-three's car at speed. He sustained serious pelvic injuries and was taken to hospital.

Lorna Davidson told Stuff her sister was "an extremely caring and amazing person".

"She loved those children like there's no tomorrow.

"I don't know how anybody could fill her shoes. She was the person that everybody dreams to be as far as what a mother would be."

The United States resident said she had spoken to her sister's "heartbroken and devastated" immediate family.

Davidson, 44, died after the Saturday afternoon crash.

She said she understood Davidson was driving to pick up her 13-year-old son from a rugby game when the driver of the other car failed to give way at the intersection.

"I do hope it was a complete accident. If there's any negligence I want that person to go to hell and rot."

Davidson, who grew up in Zimbabwe, moved to Christchurch about 12 years ago with her long-term partner and her children.

"Zimbabwe went through economic turmoil and things were very difficult. The number one thing my sister was thinking about was her children and schooling and their future in life.

"Growing up in a country that was falling to pieces wouldn't give them a good future. She wanted to go to a place where there was hope that they can thrive."

Lorna Davidson said she had not seen her sister since she left for New Zealand, but chatted to her almost daily either over Facebook or on the phone.

"It's awful … there have been several times over the last couple of days where I've thought of something and I'm like 'She will know', but I can't ask her."

She said her sister's biggest hobby was photography and she often posted photos of her children playing various sports on her Facebook page.

A Givealittle page, created by some of Davidson's family friends, said she was killed in a "incredibly horrific, extremely tragic and very unnecessary road accident".

"Angela fought the good fight and held on for as long as she possibly could, but sadly succumbed to her injuries later on Saturday evening."

The page said she had been a big part of the community.

"Angela would do anything and everything for anyone at any time. The loss of this strong, silent and loving soul is going to be very difficult for her family and her many friends to come to terms with."

Donations would be used to pay for Davidson's funeral service and help the family cope with day-to-day living expenses.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills said on Tuesday the serious crash unit was still investigating the collision..

"Thoughts are with her family and friends at this time," a police statement said.
