George Harding Lewis, III, of Amherst, died on May 6, 2018. Born on March 25, 1931, he was the son of the late Susan Hatton Lewis and George Harding Lewis, Jr. Having grown up in Portsmouth, he attended Virginia Episcopal School, the University of Virginia, and the University of Richmond School of Business. After serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, he worked as General Manager of the Petersburg Progress-Index and later as Director of Alumni and Development at V.E.S. in Lynchburg. He was a member of the Church of the Epiphany. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Smith Lewis; his daughter, Helen Lewis Kemp and her husband, Mark Winder Kemp; grandsons, Thomas Page Kemp and Landon Carter Kemp; his sister, Susan Lewis Jordan, and many close cousins, nieces and nephews. The Lewis family is grateful to Gloria Mays for her caring support during his illness. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Episcopal School, 400 V.E.S.
