Although Baahubali 2: The Conclusion started its journey in China on a promising note with pre-sales revenue going up to Rs 3.34 crore and minting Rs 16.16 crore on the opening day, the film later failed to draw audiences to theatres in large numbers as its collection went down from day four of its release in the neighbouring country.

While the film earned Rs 50 crore in three days, which is also the lifetime collection of the first installment in the Baahubali series in China, Baahubali 2 did not show growth in the following days. With Rs 16.16 crore on day one, Rs 19.72 crore on day two, Rs 15.15 crore on day three, the film gathered Rs 51.03 crore at the China box office but the business dropped to single-digit on day four with revenue of Rs 5.99 crore.

Since then, Baahubali 2 has not picked up pace and has been doing business in the same range. Even on day five of its release in China, the film picked up only Rs 5.45 crore.

Theatre admissions of the film dropped from 4.84 lakh to 1.66 lakh.

When revenue of first three days is taken into consideration of Indian films that have released in China in the recent past, Baahubali 2 stands at fifth position leaving behind only Aamir Khan’s PK and multi-starrer Dhoom 3, which had earned Rs 33.96 crore and Rs 9.01 crore respectively.

The films ahead of Baahubali 2 include Secret Superstar at Rs 182.63 crore, Hindi Medium at Rs 106 crore, Dangal at Rs 92.24 crore and Bajrangi Bhaijaan at Rs 56.84 crore.

Despite not recording a benchmark figure at the China box office, Baahubali 2 has managed to find a place on the daily highest grossers' list in the market.

However, when it comes to the film’s revenue numbers, Baahubali 2 has a long way to go for the movie to turn profitable in China. The film needs to be around USD 20 million mark (approximately Rs 137 crore) for Chinese distributors to recover the cost of releasing the film, according to a Box Office India report. This seems to be a tall ask looking at the growth of the film during the weekdays.

The distributors had allotted over 40,000 shows to Baahubali 2: The Conclusion on its opening day, much higher than others like Dangal and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

While the grand total of the film stands at Rs 63.19 crore, it wouldn’t be easy for the war drama to earn Rs 100 crore as it faces competition from previous releases like Hollywood films Rampage and Ready Player One along with local releases like Us And Them.

And going forward Baahubali’s box office run in China will only become difficult as Avengers: Infinity War will hit the theatres in the country on May 11, giving tough competition to its Indian predecessor.

The latest offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has clocked Rs 105 crore in advance booking sales, out of which Rs 45.30 crore is for the opening day.

In addition, the Avengers series has been a sensation in the Chinese film market. Released in May 2012, The Avengers raked in Rs 597.52 crore (568.5 million yuan), while Avengers: Age of Ultron, which hit the screens three years later, grossed over Rs 1,534 crore (1.46 billion yuan).

In comparison to other offerings from the Indian film industry, the Baahubali franchise has not been up to the mark signaling that human stories have an easier way to travel to China. The other film that was unable to garner lot of support from the Chinese audience was Dhoom 3. According to industry experts, the film did not do that well in China as it was like any other Hollywood film — big film, big action sequences.
