KK’s last album, Humsafar, released in 2008.

He made a name for himself right after he released his first album, Pal in 1999. Since then, singer-composer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, has focused more on Bollywood than on his independent music, giving hits such as Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999), Dus Bahane (Dus, 2005), and Tune Maari Entriyaan (Gunday, 2014). However, the 47-year-old now wants to get back to creating his own music.

“I always wanted to be a musician and not just a playback singer. I thought that maybe I will sing in Bollywood for one year, and then I will compose for myself as a singer-songwriter. But I was really enjoying the kind of songs I was getting. So, that one year changed to 22 years. I just cannot fathom how time flies,” he says.

“Also, I am the kind of a guy who gets satisfied very easily, so I never thought of working on independent music side by side. But, now I want to shift my focus to independent music again.” he adds.

The Delhi-born musician admits that because of his demand in Bollywood, he had to put the “musician inside” on the back burner. However, he does not regret doing so.

“I have no regrets. You make a choice, and it’s yours. It was my decision and I trusted myself with it. If you see the songs that I have sung in Bollywood, you will realise I have done a variety [of them]. All of that opened me up, maybe not as a musician, but definitely as a human being,” says KK.

“Having said that, yes, I do agree people have been extremely patient with me. It’s high time that I work on another album now, so that people can hear my music again. I understand it has been a long time. They [fans] have been with me through thick and thin for 20-25 years. So, I know I owe it to them,” adds the singer, whose last album, Humsafar, released 10 years ago.

“I know that I am an amazing singer, and I am not being arrogant when I say it — I know that I am a good singer. I want people to now tell me whether I am a good musician or not,” he says.
