Thieves behind $2m Brighton jewel heist 'knew what they were doing'
Professionals may be behind the theft of more than $2 million worth of jewellery from a family home in Melbourne's southeast.
At least eight watches, Chopard diamonds and a $15,000 Cartier bracelet are among 50 items taken when thieves broke into the Brighton home between 3.30pm and 7.30pm on April 26 and stole a safe.
Family members were at work and school at the time and it is understood the home's security system was not activated.
Detective Senior Constable Cameron Mitchelhill said it's likely at least two offenders are involved as the safe would have been "quite heavy".
The thieves did not leave behind any evidence and weren't captured on CCTV.
"It appears the offenders have known what they're doing," Det Sen Const Mitchelhill said on Wednesday.
It's unclear if the offenders have been able to open the safe, but police are canvassing second hand shops and pawn stores for the distinct items.
"A lot of the items are quite high-end and unique; they would be recognisable if someone is to see them," Det Sen Const Mitchelhill said.
Anyone who has seen the items or any suspicious activity is urged to contact police.
