Prairie Township voters said yes May 8 to a 3.61-mill levy for fire and emergency medical services.
With 86 percent of precincts reporting at 10:30 p.m, the Franklin County Board of Elections figures showed the levy passing with 978 vote (66 percent) in favor to 496 votes (34 percent) against.
According to information from the township, the levy will cost $126.35 per $100,000 of home valuation annually. It's expected to generate an additional $1.1 million for the Prairie Township Fire Department.
Fire Chief Chris Snyder said the additional revenue would allow the department to maintain its current level of service and implement a capital-improvement program for major purchases, such as a new ladder truck to replace one that's almost 18 years old.
The Prairie Township Fire Department has an annual budget of about $5 million and operates two fire stations. Without the additional money, township officials said the department would be in the red in about two years.
