Corporation fever review

Thiruvananthapuram: Vector source-reduction programmes with focus on houses, activities to check communicable diseases, and general hygiene were the focus of a meeting to review fever-prevention steps being undertaken by the city Corporation and the State Health Department.

Mayor V.K. Prasanth presided over the meeting.

Reports from health inspectors on steps for fever control in 100 wards of the city Corporation were presented at the meeting. The health inspectors reported that to prevent mosquitoes from proliferating, spraying to destroy mosquito larvae and fogging to kill mosquitoes were taken up in all the wards.

This year, only 14 dengue fever cases have been reported in the city, they said. Mass fogging and source-reduction activities were done focussing on the areas from where dengue was reported, helping in containing spread of dengue fever.

In wake of frequent rain, mosquito-reduction activities will be taken up in houses in city in days to come, the Mayor said. One person will cover 50 houses.

As part of day-to-day cleaning activities, removal of silt from drains and prevention of water accumulation in potholes and the like will be done, Mr. Prasanth said.

Health standing committee chairperson K. Sreekumar directed that inn days to come concerted efforts of will be taken by the Corporation, Health department, and National Health Mission under the ledership of respective area councillors. The support of residents’ associations and ward sanitation and health committees will be sought.

To prevent water from accumulating in public places, glass bottles will be collected at 10 special counters on May 11. Though plastic waste is collected every day through the material recovery facilitation centre, 10 special centres in various places will accept plastic waste on May 17.

A special clean drive will be held on May 26 to remove all waste from the city.
