Monfils set up a second round clash with Nadal after overcoming Nikoloz Basilashvili in three sets on Monday night - 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Nadal is in fearsome form and he is currently on a 19-match winning streak.
With his sights firmly set on a sixth Madrid Open title, it remains to be seen who will stop him.
Monfils, who takes to court against Nadal on Wednesday, twisted his achilles in his victory over Basilashvili.
While hopeful he will able to face the world No 1, he doesn’t fancy his chances of toppling him.

I’m not in my best shape but I like to know that next to my name is “you never know”, so you never know
“I’m not in my best shape so that’s a shame a little bit,” he said.
“I just wish I can give a great match.
"When you step on the court you still have to believe you can win – that’s the beauty of the sport, you know, even though I’m not in my best shape but I like to know that next to my name is 'you never know', so you never know.”
On the nature of his injury, Monfils added: “I think I turned a little bit my achilles but I will see.
“I just walked back off the court.
“I hope it will be fine.”
Nadal will also be looking to extend his record of 46 straight sets won on clay.
