IIT-M to conduct advanced research to reduce accidents

The Indian Institute of Technology - Madras has signed an agreement with technology company Continental for advanced research in machine learning. The collaboration has been code-named Project NeuroMotive.

The institute’s capability in machine learning and bio-inspired neural networks will contribute to the Continental’s advanced driver assistance systems that can assist the driver in both everyday and dangerous situations, warn the driver and even intervene in driving when necessary, according to a release.

Prashanth Doreswamy, market head, Continental India, said, “Project NeuroMotive is only a first step in our collaboration with IIT Madras. As a technology company, we focus on making future mobility concepts a reality.”

Ambitious plan

According to Alexander Klotz, Head of Continental’s in-house R&D centre Technical Center India, the company’s aim is to further grow local competence in artificial intelligence, not just through hiring, but also by leveraging the ecosystem through relevant partnerships.

IIT-M’s Dean of industrial consultancy and sponsored research Ravindra Gettu said the institute’s expertise in bio-inspired neural networks can help expand the scope of what assisted driving functions can accomplish.
