Two of the state’s most well-known breweries made major announcements recently: Tree House Brewing Company of Charlton is mounting a major expansion project while Night Shift Brewing of Everett will be opening a new brewpub in Boston.

For Tree House, this will be roughly the ridiculously popular brewery’s 500th expansion (OK, fifth or sixth), coming on the heels of the opening of their Charlton location last year.

Nate Lanier, co-founder of Tree House, announced on the Tree House blog last week that the expansion project will begin this summer (pending approval from the town).

The expansion will include a 16,000-square-foot expansion to the brewery’s retail shop and brewery, including several open pergolas and a second bar that is double the size of the current one. That will also allow for filling and selling growlers, which isn't currently available.

They also plan on adding a 2,000-square-foot indoor mezzanine overlooking the brewery, and the new can sale area will be above the canning line, allowing a view inside the brewery.

But wait! There’s more, a lot more.

Lanier wrote that they plan on adding a private function room to host events, and they will add several outdoor spaces for use during warmer weather.

In addition, three miles of trails that can be used for walking and mountain biking on the property will open soon. The trails, located on Tree House’s property, connects to the Capen Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, which can be biked or walked.

They also plan on planting a fruit tree orchard, having beehives and turning five acres of the property into hop fields and addition open space. Parking will also be improved.

Tree House will also go green.

“We have grown substantially as a brewery, and with that growth comes increasing raw material and energy needs,” Lanier wrote. “To offset our impact, we are taking a number of dramatic steps to minimize our energy use and to utilize cutting-edge technology to reduce our impact on the environment. We are pleased to share that we have committed to generating 40 percent of our electricity needs with on-site renewable technology within two years. Within five years, we have a goal to generate 100 percent of our electricity needs on-site through renewable means.”

Night Shift Brewing's project is also an ambitious one.

They announced that next year they will be opening Night Shift Lovejoy, a new brewpub on the first floor of the Converse building near Boston’s TD Garden.

The new location will be 12,000 square feet, and have a full kitchen, seating for 325, 30 taps and a 10-barrel brewing system.

The current Everett location will remain open.

The new location will have waterfront patio seating and will have a coffee bar during the day.

“This will be an innovation playground,” said Anna Jobe, who will be the managing brewer at the new location.

Night Shift Lovejoy will concentrate on small batch and experimental beers.

Night Shift is working with Helios Design Group and Cafo Construction to build the brewery, and hope to keep a turn-of-the century look, Night Shift co-founder Michael Oxton said.

“We have such a strong following of beer lovers living and working within the city,” said Oxton. “Night Shift needed a Boston zip code.”
