GM plans new $65M parts warehouse in Michigan

General Motors plans to expand its parts and processing operations in mid-Michigan with a $65 million warehouse.

The new site, the automaker said Tuesday, will replace one for GM's Customer Care and Aftersales division that the company leases in Burton, Mich., near Flint. The new warehouse will be more than 1 million square feet -- nearly one and a half times larger than the current operations -- in the same city.

"We now have room to grow, and a great opportunity to serve our customers even better," Lisa Veneziano, GM's executive director of global aftersales supply chain warehousing and logistics, said in a statement.

About 650-700 employees of the current operations, which service dealers and independent repair shops, will transfer to the new location upon its expected completion in early 2019.

GM, according to a company spokesman, is not releasing details about new jobs or hiring plans for the operations at this time.

NorthPoint Development, headquartered near Kansas City, Mo., will build the new warehouse and lease it to GM for an initial term of 12.5 years. The combined investment between the two companies, following state and local tax incentives, is expected to be $62.5 million, primarily for new equipment for the warehouse.
