PIL seeks to handover board exam results to parents directly

A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction that the results of board exams be handed over directly to the parents of students by the respective schools, instead of publishing them in newspapers and on websites, to prevent students who fail in the exams from committing suicide.

The PIL filed by A. Senthil Kumar of Chennai said the results could be handed over during the parent-teacher meetings.

“On seeing the results (10th, 11th and 12th), students who have failed are distressed and some even commit suicide,” he said in the petition. Mr. Kumar said counselling arranged for those who failed to clear the exams.

Submitting that a representation given by him to the authorities on April 14 in this regard had been kept in cold storage, he sought a direction from the court. He also sought an interim injunction preventing the government from publishing the results of the board exams conducted in 2017-18. The PIL is likely to come up for hearing on Wednesday before a vacation bench..

In another PIL, advocate M.K. Martin has sought a direction to upgrade the State board syllabus on par with the CBSE and NCERT syllabi. A division bench of the High Court has ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu government.
