COLOMBO (News 1^st) – The judicature amendment bill, which was drafted with the intention of expediting judicial proceedings on large-scale fraud and corruption, is to be presented to parliament on Wednesday (May 9).

The supreme court in its interpretation on this bill, which seeks to take up such cases before a permanent high court trial at bar, stated a two-thirds majority and a referendum will be required on certain sections of this bill.

However, as parliament was prorogued in April, the bill must be reintroduced to the parliamentary agenda. Minister of Health, Dr. Rajitha Senarathne speaking to the media today said that the bill will be presented to Parliament tomorrow.

Minister of Justice, Thalatha Atukorale said, this bill has been drafted while protecting Judicial Independence. She also noted that careful steps had been taken in order to ensure that clauses contained in the 13th amendment to the constitution are not violated.
