Cadbury World attracts around 120,000 visitors every year and a $7 million redevelopment – complete with magic elevator, sensory chocolate experience and historic displays. It was set to open later this year.
It was also supposed to be one of the new products on display at the annual Trenz tourism conference, which has attracted 1500 industry figures to Dunedin.
Cadbury World employed 21 full time and 18 part-time workers. Cadbury Dunedin site manager Judith Mair said that both premises would remain closed until consultation gets completed in a week.
That would give staff time to provide feedback “on whether or not they want the attraction to reopen”. All team members, both casual and permanent, were on paid leave throughout consultation, Mair said.
Trenz, which introduces 300 New Zealand tourism operators to international travel and tourism buyers, is being hosted for the first time by Dunedin, in partnership with Waitaki and Southland.
