A 60-year-old man died early Monday in Montcalm County after accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a gun he was showing to his wife, state police said.

Troopers were called to the Pleasure Point RV Resort about 9:30 a.m. for what was reported as an unknown shooting incident.

“Responding officers arrived and found a 60-year-old male resident of Whittaker lying on the floor with a single gunshot wound to the chest,” state police from the Lakeview Post said in a press release.

“Neighbors, responding troopers, and ambulance personnel attempted CPR without success.”

The man, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The investigation revealed that the victim had been cleaning his handgun,” police said. “He was showing the gun to his wife when the gun was accidently discharged.”

The victim and his wife were part-time residents at the park, splitting their time there and at their home in Whittaker.
