A day after the Samajwadi Party made announcements for Kairana Lok Sabha and Noorpur assembly by-polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced to field women candidates on the two seats.

While it named Mriganka Singh its candidate for the Kairana Lok Sabha seat, Avani Singh has been named for the Noorpur (Bijnore) assembly seat.

They will be facing joint candidates fielded by SP and RLD, who both are Muslims.

While the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has already announced that it will not field any candidate, the Congress, sources said, is still in a dilemma.

Kairana and Noorpur seats fell vacant following the death of BJP lawmakers. MP Hukum Singh passed away after a prolonged illness in February while Lokendra Singh, the Noorpur MLA, died in a road accident in the same month. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday named Naim-ul-Hasan as the party’s candidate for the Noorpur (Bijnore) assembly by-poll.

He also said that the party has decided to support Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Tabassum Hasan for the Kairana Lok Sabha by-poll.

Both the by-polls will take place on May 28. Tabassum Hasan was the Bahujan Samaj Party MP from Kairana from 2009 to 2014 before migrating to the Samajwadi Party.

Under the pact with the RLD, Tabassum took primary membership of the party on Sunday. The politics of Kairana revolves around the families of Hukum Singh and Munawwar Hasan. Both are Gujjars but one is Hindu and another Muslim.

Tabassum is Munawwar Hasan’s widow and their son Nahid Hasan is sitting MLA of Kairana from the Samajwadi Party. Tabassum and Munawwar Hasan were Kairana MPs.

Tabbasum had entered politics after the demise of her husband.Hukum Singh’s daughter Mriganka took over the political legacy of her father. Hukum Singh won the seat in 2014.
