Trains collide in Germany, killing 2 and injuring 14

Authorities say two people have died and 14 have been injured after a passenger train hit a stationary cargo train in southern Germany late on Monday. Police said those killed were the driver of the passenger train and a female passenger. One of the injured is in a serious condition. Markus Trieb, a spokesman for northern Swabia police, said on Tuesday that the passenger train was travelling from Augsburg to Ingolstadt when it hit the cargo train near a station in the town of Aichach.

Australia's centre-right government is expected to announce hefty health and infrastructure spending and deliver some voter-sweetening tax cuts in an annual budget on Tuesday that unofficially kicks off campaigning for elections next year. Speculation is also growing that recent growth in government coffers, largely from company taxes, will let the Liberal-National coalition fulfil its promise of returning the finances to surplus a year earlier than planned.

Two new cracks in the ground emitting lava and gas have opened up in a Hawaii community where 35 structures have burned down. Officials say there are 12 fissures in Leilani Estates. Residents of the evacuated subdivision are being allowed to check on their properties from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day until further notice. Officials say residents must be prepared to leave on short notice.

Chennai tourist dies in Srinagar stone-pelting incident

A 22-year-old tourist was killed and a local woman injured in an incident of stone throwing at Narbal on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road in Baramulla district on Monday evening. An official said R. Tirumani, son of Rajavel of Chennai, died at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in Srinagar. He was hit on the nose and the forehead. He was here with his parents and sister.
