Avengers: Infinity War has become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India, eclipsing another Disney film, The Jungle Book. Infinity War, the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, achieved the milestone in less than two weeks of its release.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, it beat Jungle Book’s Rs 182 crore net and Rs 261 crore gross figures with gross earnings of Rs 246 crore and net earnings of Rs 192 crore. The record-breaking numbers also make it the fifth biggest contributor to Infinity War’s global box office figures of $1.1 billion.

The film has been breaking records worldwide despite not having been released in China yet. The Middle Kingdom has emerged as the world’s second largest movie market. With over $35 million in the bank so far in India, the film’s other top grossing territories include South Korea ($69 million), UK ($67 million, Mexico ($48 million) and Brazil ($44 million).

Despite being released on just 2000 screens - a big Bollywood film will usually secure twice that - Infinity War exceeded all expectations. It made over Rs 100 crore in its opening weekend, an unprecedented figure for a foreign film in India.

Other top grossing Hollywood movies in India are Furious 7 and Jurassic World (both made over Rs 150 crore) and Spider-Man 3 and Avengers: Age of Ultron (both crossed Rs 100 crore)

With a China release scheduled for May 11 - Captain America: Civil War debuted with $98 million there, while Black Panther opened to a solid $66 million - Infinity War will now set its sights on the $2 billion mark globally. Its current total stands at a little over $1.1 billion in just 11 days of release. Only three films have crossed $2 billion in history - James Cameron’s films Avatar ($2.7 billion) and Titanic ($2.1 billion), and JJ Abram’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2 billion).

Infinity War is well paced to become the highest grossing entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Iron Man 3 ($1.2 billion), Black Panther ($1.3 billion), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4 billion) and The Avengers ($1.5 billion) in touching distance.
