Impossible task

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “A time to talk” (May 3). Can Indians really learn some basic etiquette rules? Take for example, can Indians really give up on there inherent characteristic of spitting paan here and there? How much have those etiquette lessons have any effect on the people?

There is always going to be a section — a large one at that — which will pride itself in not obeying the rules. Even today, it is amazing to see how quickly people start making frenzied calls to merely say, “I have reached” (as if it is an announcement of national importance) as soon as the airline announces phones can be switched on!
