2,925 eve-teasers booked in city in 15 months

City Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang said on Sunday the Mahila Rakshak teams had caught 2,925 eve-teasers. Most of them were students and youngsters, he said.

The Mahila Rakshak teams were constituted on January 26, 2017. They act as decoy parties to curb eve teasing, the Commissioner told the newsmen in an informal chat.

“We gave counselling to the eve-teasers. If necessary, we will form more teams for the safety of women,” Mr. Sawang said.

In special drives, the police registered cases against 1,802 drunkards in the last four months and 91 persons had been given jail terms for drunk driving, said DCP-Traffic T. Ram Prasad.

The raids were conducted at different places and ₹28.33 lakh was collected as fine from the accused. The drives would continue to avoid road accidents, he said during a counselling session.

Members of the Mahila Mitra groups, coordinators at the police-station level, and the officers reviewed the functioning of the groups at all police stations on Sunday.

DCP (Law and Order), Additional DCP Shaik Nawab Jaan, ACPs N. Satyanandam and Kanchala Srinivas and other officers spoke with the group members and asked them to take measures to prevent child abuse cases.

“The Vijayawada Police planned to constitute Youth Groups to prevent sexual abuse against students. Orientation programmes would be conducted for the youngsters,” Mr. Sawang said.
