Lake County Captains fall to Kane County

Kane County pulled away in the eighth to beat Low-A Lake County, 7-1.

The Cougars scored four runs in the frame to open up a 3-1 contest. Luis Alejandro Basabe’s two-run single keyed Kane County’s big inning. Two innings earlier, Jasrado Chisholm’s leadoff home run broke a 1-1 tie and Yan Sanchez’s two-out double put the Cougars up two.

The Captains (13-16) scored their run in the fourth when Will Benson hit his sixth home run. Benson, a 2016 first-round pick and the Indians’ No. 7-ranked prospect, is batting .209 with 14 RBI through 26 games.

Kirk McCarty allowed three runs and six hits through seven innings for the Captains. McCarty (1-2) struck out seven and walked one before he was relieved by Jonathan Teaney, who yielded four runs and recorded two outs.

Brian Shaffer held the Captains to a run and six hits in seven innings. Shaffer (1-2) walked two and struck out three to earn his first victory.

Lake County loaded the bases in the ninth before Ernie Clement grounded out to short to end the game.
