The Daytona Beach News-Journal is asking advertising customers to be aware of a possible scam involving phone calls and credit card numbers.
A woman who identified herself as a classified advertising customer warned about a man who called her claiming to be from The News-Journal advertising staff. The woman said the caller told her that her advertisement would not be published because there was an issue with her credit card, and if she provided the information, he would make sure her ad would run as scheduled.
The woman said the incoming phone number was blocked and she hung up on the caller. She also said she called other classified advertisers, shared her story and was told by others they had received similar calls.
The News-Journal will never call a customer and ask for credit card information, Publisher Bill Offill said. Anyone who receives a call of this nature should report it to law enforcement authorities.
