Cabinet to take call on panel’s recommendation

Punjab Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday submitted the report of a Cabinet subcommittee constituted for the purpose of formulating a comprehensive policy on sand mining in the State to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

‘Stock to last 100 years’

Mr. Sidhu said during field visits it was found that Punjab had sand stocks to last another 100 years and gravel for another 170 years.

“The committee has recommended fixation of the price of sand at ₹1,000 per 100 cubic feet,” said Mr. Sidhu, pointing out that earlier there was no price fixation for sand and supply was also lacking resulting in people getting sand at exorbitant prices.

Capt. Singh said the Cabinet would soon take a final decision with regard to the recommendations made by the subcommittee on mining.

“We are committed to bringing in transparency in the system of mining and also ensuring smooth and seamless supply of sand and gravel to the people at affordable rates,” he added.
