LUDHIANA: Basti Jodhewal police have booked about 25 persons accused for attempt to murder an individual after they attacked him, as he refused to change his statement before the police in an assault case on his friend. The accused were identified as Anku, Raju, Teju, Sumani, Manu Grewal, and
Sunny Jindal, while 15 to 20 persons were yet to be identified.
Complainant Sanjeev Saini of Preet Nagar said he was present in his ‘mohalla’ near the office of a politician, when the accused — armed with a sharp-edged weapon — reached there at 9.30pm on Thursday. He added that they attacked him with that weapon, and beat him with a baseball bat. Sanjeev later said his brother
Neeraj reached the spot and took him to a private hospital on Brown Road. He added that the accused persons had beat up his friend
Rohit a few days ago, and were pressurizing him to change his statement made to the police in the case. After the incident, the complainant informed the police.
Cops from Basti Jodhewal police reached Sanjeev and started investigation. They later booked the accused under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of a common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Station house officer (SHO) of Basti Jodhewal police station, inspector
Muhammad Jameel, said the accused persons were on the run, and a manhunt had been launched to arrest them.
