PUDUCHERRY: A 52-year-old man from
Cuddalore district of
Tamil Nadu, who accompanied his daughter appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (
NEET) here on Sunday, died on Monday in a government hospital where he was admitted to following complaints of ill health and high fever.
The deceased has been identified as S Srinivasan of Panruti.
Srinivasan’s family members and anti-NEET campaigners linked his death to allotting exam at centres outside Tamil Nadu. However, doctors who treated him declared that he had died of meningitis (brain fever) that subsequently led to an epileptic attack.
“He was running a high temperature when he came with his daughter appearing for NEET at a centre in
Puducherry on Sunday. He complained of uneasiness after NEET. He was admitted to government hospital where scan reports revealed that he was suffering from meningitis (inflammation of membranes surrounding the brain). Meningitis generally results in an epileptic attack. He suffered an epileptic attack on Monday and succumbed to the attack. His death cannot be attributed to any factor other than meningitis,” said a doctor in Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Research Institute (IGGMC & RI).
Police said Srinivasan’s daughter, S Swathi, had been allotted a centre at Velrampet in Puducherry. Srinivasan, Swathi, his wife and younger daughter reached here on Sunday morning.
Swathi appeared for NEET while the other three waited for her near the centre. Srinivasan complained of uneasiness around 3pm when the family was planning to return to their hometown.
He was immediately admitted to IGGMC & RI.
