AUSTIN, Texas — The Virginia Tech women’s golf team had a successful NCAA tournament debut Monday, tying for fourth place out of 18 teams after the first round of the Austin Regional.

The Hokies, who have made the NCAAs in only their third year of competition, are seeded 14th in the regional. They shot an even-par 288, tying Baylor for fourth.

Texas leads the pack with a 7-under 281. Arkansas is at 284 and Michigan State at 285.

The top six teams and the top three individuals not on those six squads will advance from the three-day regional to the national championships in Oklahoma.

Virginia Tech’s Amanda Hollandsworth (Floyd County) is tied for sixth among the 96 golfers with a 2-under 70. She is two strokes out of first.

Tech’s Emily Mahar and Amanda Woodward are one shot back and tied for 15th.

WOMEN’S GOLF

UVa leads regional

MADISON, Wis. — Eighth-seeded Virginia is in first place out of 18 teams after the first round of its NCAA regional.

UVa shot a 9-under 279 — the program’s best 18-hole performance ever in the NCAAs. Duke is in second, four shots back. Old Dominion is tied for 10th with a 7-over 295.

Beth Lillie of UVa is tied for first with Wisconsin’s Gabby Curtis out of 96 golfers with a 5-under 67. Lillie had the best score in relation to par ever by a Cavalier in the NCAAs.

UVa’s Katharine Patrick is tied for fifth with a 3-under 69. UVa’s Anna Redding is tied for seventh with a 70.

The top six teams and the top three individuals not on those six squads will advance from the three-day regional to the national championships.

MEN’S GOLF

W&L and Keiser get NCAA bids

Washington and Lee received one of seven at-large bids to the 42-team NCAA Division III tournament Monday.

Ferrum’s Lance Keiser received one of six individual bids. The sophomore has a 72 stroke average. He won the Kinder Memorial and tied for first at the Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Invitational,

W&L, which was the ODAC tournament runner-up, made the NCAA field for the third straight year. The Division III tournament will be held May 15-18 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

W&L to hit the road for NCAAs

W&L will be heading to Pennsylvania for the first round of the 42-team NCAA Division III tournament.

The Generals (15-4), who earned an automatic bid by winning the ODAC tournament last weekend, will face Cabrini (12-7) in a first-round game Saturday at York College.

The winner will face fifth-ranked York (13-4) in Sunday’s second round.

The May 26 semifinals and May 27 final will again be held at Roanoke College. W&L made the final four last year.

  • Virginia Tech’s previously announced first-round game against Georgetown in the NCAA Division I tournament is going to be played at high school in Raleigh, North Carolina. The game will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Cardinal Gibbons High School. That school will also host Sunday’s second-round game between North Carolina and the Tech-Georgetown winner. UNC is unable to host the Friday and Sunday games on its campus because its lacrosse stadium is under renovation and its football stadium is booked for commencement.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

W&L heading to Fredericksburg

W&L was assigned Monday to an NCAA tournament regional at Mary Washington.

The Generals (18-7), who earned an automatic bid by winning the ODAC tournament last weekend, will face Franciscan (12-6) in the first round Friday. The winner will meet Mary Washington (19-4) in the second round Saturday. The regional final will be Sunday.

Amherst (10-9), Lebanon Valley (12-6) and North Carolina Wesleyan (12-3) are the other teams in the regional.

Generals honored

W&L’s Michelle Fleenor (15-4) has been named the ODAC player of the year, while W&L’s Valerie Marshall (15-7) was chosen rookie of the year.

W&L’s Erin Ness has been named coach of the year for the fourth time.

Fleenor was joined on the All-ODAC first team by W&L’s Emily Kochard and Roanoke’s Madeline Herring, Carolyn Kitsock and Janny Alvarado.

Marshall was joined on the second team by W&L’s Mary Hampton McNeal and DeeDee Aeschliman.

MEN’S TENNIS

W&L heading to Atlanta

W&L was assigned Monday to an NCAA tournament regional at Emory University in Atlanta.

The Generals (12-6), who earned an automatic bid by winning the ODAC tournament last weekend, will face Thomas More (13-3) in the first round Friday.

The winner will face Emory (16-4) on Saturday.

The winner of Saturday’s match will meet Sewanee (21-5) or North Carolina Wesleyan (18-3) on Sunday.
