Kumbakonam fire: CB-CID searches advocate’s house

Sleuths from the CB-CID wing of the State police from Thanjavur raided the house of advocate S. Tamizharasan in East Tambaram here on Sunday morning.

They were searching for the lawyer after a complaint was filed that he had defrauded the parents of victims in the Kumbakonam school fire tragedy that occurred in 2004.

The team got the keys to Mr. Tamizharasan’s house from his neighbour in the presence of revenue officials and conducted a search. It is alleged that the team secured some important documents, and action would be taken based on the evidence. The lawyer and his family members were on holiday when the police raided his house.

The CB-CID had registered a case against the lawyer and the action was taken following a directive from the Madras High Court.

R. Divya, 22, of Kumbakonam, had filed a complaint with the DSP, CB-CID, Thanjavur, alleging that Mr. Tamizharasan had misappropriated ₹2.3 crore which was granted as solatium to the parents of the victims.

A total of 94 children were killed and scores injured in the fire that struck the Sri Krishna Middle School on July 16, 2004.
