GUWAHATI: An overwhelming majority of organisations in Assam's Brahmaputra valley including ruling BJP's ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill during consultation with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) here on Monday.

About 135 organisations and individuals from different parts of Brahmaputra valley submitted their views to the JPC.

The JPC is on five-day visit to the state as well as in Shillong for taking views from organisations and individuals on the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1955 to facilitate citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The members of JPC will visit Bengali-majority Barak valley on Tuesday where it will have consultations with approximately 300 organisations. In contrast, majority of the groups in Barak valley are in support of the Bill.
