He came up short as Bellew's deadly left hook found its target in the fifth round to bring proceedings to a premature end.
Few expected the fight to go 12 rounds – but who was ahead on the scorecards when the Hayemaker was stopped in his tracks?
Express Sport scored the fight as follows:

Round three: 10-8 Bellew
Round four: 10-9 Bellew
Round five: Bellew TKO
It was an emotional victory for Bellew, who burst into tears immediately after the referee's intervention as he shared an embrace with promoter Eddie Hearn.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, the Bomber dedicated his victory to his late brother-in-law, who died suddenly last year just months before the first proposed rematch was scheduled to take place.
Haye declined to speculate on his future immediately after the fight – but retirement seems an almost inescapable eventuality for one of British boxing's most successful stars.
