Typical of “at home” stores that grew up in isolated areas of Isabella County, this home, built in 1893 by Gilbert Johnson, who had a Sherman City store built in 1879. In 1925, Ervin and Nellie Herman bought Johnson’s home and store. After Ervin’s 1927 death, Nellie, above, moved the store to the Johnson house, where she operated it until being the last Sherman City business to close in 1943. The Mid-Michigan History feature is a Morning Sun exclusive by Mt. Pleasant author Jack R. Westbrook.
