In a further challenge to police in such repeated cases in Baleswar district, unidentified miscreants on Friday night looted Rs 36 lakh from two State Bank of India (SBI) ATMs in Baleswar town.

While one ATM is located at Sunahat under the Town police station, the other is at ITI Square under the jurisdiction of the Sahadevkhunta police.

In both the cases, the miscreants used gas-cutters to break open the ATMs’ cash chambers. While Rs 26 lakh was looted from the Sunahat kiosk, the miscreants decamped with Rs 10 lakh from the ITI Square ATM.

Although police began investigation with a sniffer dog and a forensic team they were still clueless.

Sahadevkhunta PS IIC Jayanta Behera said it was suspected that both the loots were committed by a professional gang. Initially, they looted the Sunahat ATM and subsequently the ITI Square counter.

“We got information from the ATM headquarters at Mumbai at around 4 am; and although we swung into action immediately, by that time the miscreants had fled. Two separate cases under Sections 457 and 380 of IPC and IT Act have been registered; and police investigation is on,” said Behera.
