'Incredibly courageous' public put fire out as man died outside Dunedin church

People mourn after a man died outside the Nations Church in Dunedin.

The death of a man on fire outside a Dunedin church is not being treated as suspicious, police say. 

Emergency services were called to King Edward Street at 10:47am to Nations Church carpark.

Members of the public tried to put the fire out, but the man died at the scene.

A man has died after setting himself alight outside the Nations Church in Dunedin.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Hanna said formal identification processes were underway, and police were working to notify the man's next of kin. 

"We are extremely grateful to the members of the public who went to the man's assistance and who managed to put the fire out," Hanna said. 

"The actions of these people were incredibly courageous."

A man has died after being found on fire outside the Nations Church in Dunedin.

The church's website said its vision was to: "Change our world. Growing people to be going people."

Its mission was to "make disciples of all nations" and to provide "a loving caring church family".

The man's death would be referred to the coroner, and support was being offered to those who helped or witnessed the incident, police said.Â
