Manchester United legend Ferguson has undergone surgery for a brain haemorrhage.
A club statement confirmed the Scot was in a serious condition, saying: “Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.
“The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery.
"His family request privacy in this matter.”
And the Manchester Evening News say news of Ferguson's health has left the playing squad devastated.
It is said that a number of players were made aware the 76-year-old had suffered a fall at his Cheshire home earlier today.
At first, they were not aware of the severity of it.
However, despite the club's positive statement, Manchester United squad members who played under Ferguson have been left crushed by the news.
The footballing world is now coming together on behalf of the Scot.
Ferguson's son, Darren, missed Doncaster's match with Wigan this afternoon.
And Everton boss Sam Allardyce, who is close to the United legend, has wished Ferguson well.
“He is a personal friend and I hope he makes a full recovery," he said.
"I knew it was bad when his son Darren didn't take charge of Doncaster today."
