In Manipur, the sericulture industry is mostly focused on sufficing domestic consumption of the state with the raw silk production. The state government provides remuneration of 1,50,000 to 2,50,000 rupees per annum with one acre systematic plantation and proper mulberry rearing.
According to Sericulture Director, S. Kunjakishore, upgradation of regional silk institutes, introduction of Integrated Bi-voltine Sericulture Project, IBSP, on Tripura Model, one IBSDP in mulberry with financial assistance from the Ministry of Textiles and composite “Soil to Silk Project” are in the pipeline. AIR correspondent reports the total productive hectares covered by silkworm food plants have been in increasing.
Under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, Integrated Sericulture Development Projects for valley as well as hill districts, so far Special Plan Assistance of Rs.75 crore in both mulberry and Eri sector have been implemented.
The main purpose is to strengthen the sericulture infrastructure in seed production and extension of works, skill development as well as extension of technology from lab to field level. In about 91 villages more than 22 thousand workers are engaged in sericulture industry.
