With The Good Doctor reinvigorating the broadcast medical drama, NBC has decided to add one of its own. Upfronts -- when networks announce the new series on their schedules -- may not be until next week, but the network has ordered the doc drama New Amsterdam to series.
Ryan Eggold, who we last saw as Tom in NBC's The Blacklist, will play Dr. Max Goodwin (how's that for the name of a hotshot doctor?), a doctor who is out to kick the medical field in the pants. Based on Bellevue hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country, New Amsterdam follows Goodwin's efforts to bring a little respect to his "understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital."
Joining Eggold in the cast are Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine also star.
If you're like, "HMMMMM that show name sounds familiar," it's because it should. New Amsterdam was also the name of a 2008 series on Fox that starred Jamie Lannister (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau), who was like an immortal detective or something.
In addition to New Amsterdam, NBC previously ordered Julian Fellowes' (Downton Abbey) The Gilded Age to series. NBC is expected to announce its 2018-2019 fall schedule on Monday, May 14.
