Horror attack by DRILL-wielding maniac leaves woman with 'extremely grave injuries'

A WOMAN has sustained “extremely grave” injuries after she was attacked with a cordless DRILL in Strabane, County Tyrone.

The 38-year-old was rushed to hospital with “a very serious head injury”, police said.

The horrific attack in the Railway Street area of the town took place at around 2am BST this morning (Saturday).

Police said the victim was in a critical but stable condition.

Detectives are questioning a 17-year-old man.

Investigators are “exploring a possible homophobic motive for the crime" and are appealing for any information that might help with their probe.

Det Sgt Brian Reid said: "This was a brutal attack and the injuries sustained by the victim are extremely grave."

SDLP assembly member for West Tyrone, Daniel McCrossan, described the attack as "one of the most horrific incidents" during his time as a politician.

He added: "It is a monstrous attack and one that has sent shockwaves across the entirety of the wider Strabane community today.

"I actually felt sick, that this could happen."
