Customs officers detect fivecases of smuggling of gold

The Customs officers at the Chennai International Airport have detected five cases of smuggling of gold and one case of smuggling of foreign currency.

On Thursday, two women passengers Jyoti, 44, and Vairambal, 65,of Madurai , who arrived from Kuala Lumpur brought 600 gm jewellery, weighing 1.2 kg and valued at ₹36 lakhs, by wearing it. As they had not declared the jewellery the same was seized.

In another case, Shamirul Hakh, 39, of Kerala, who arrived from Dubai brought 133 gm gold valued at ₹4 lakh mixed in a rubbery concealed in his undergarments.

On Tuesday, during the course of cleaning an Indigo Airlines flight 6E 052 from Singapore, the officers found a specially made cylindrical pipe taped beneath the seat 27F.

On pulling it out, they found a packet containing 799 grams of gold valued at ₹25 lakh.

In another case same day, Suseema Santhi Edirisinghe, 46, from Sri Lanka arrived from Colombo and upon searching, the officers found 111 grams of gold valued at ₹3 lakh concealed in the rectum.

On Wednesday, Japanese Yen worth nearly ₹2.65 lakhs were seized from Naina Mohamed of Chennai, 50. He was bound for Malaysia.
