Cinema under fascist attack, says Kamal

Kerala State Chalachitra Academy chairman Kamal has said that Thursday (May 3, 2018) ‘will go down as a black day in the history of Indian cinema’ for the ‘arbitrary’ manner in which the National Film Awards were distributed.

Inaugurating a three-day workshop on sub-titling of films organised jointly by the Academy, the Federation of Film Societies of India (Keralam) and the SIEMAT here on Friday, Mr. Kamal said the Indian film industry was facing a ‘facist attack’. The contemporary times placed a heavy responsibility on film societies, that of promoting films that served to emancipate the people culturally. With digital film-making gaining currency, film societies have a great opportunity to do this, he said.

Academy vice chairperson Bina Paul said the digital medium provided immense opportunities in film-making.

With classy sub-titles, it would be possible to take many foreign language films to the people and, simultaneously, take Malayalam cinema to the next level.

Camp director G.P. Ramachandran, FFSI (Keralam) chairman Chelavoor Venu, secretary V.K Joseph, and SIEMAT director M.K. Lal, were among others who, spoke.
