Rashford capitalised on a mistake from Brighton centre-back Lewis Dunk and was set free on goal, albeit from a tight angle.
The Manchester United star dwelled on the ball though and passed up the opportunity to pass to team-mate Anthony Martial.
Mourinho was visibly annoyed with the striker on the sidelines for not passing to Martial, who was free.
But Brighton midfielder Steve Sidwell, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports, says Rashford was right not to lay it off.
Obviously it’s a tight angle, but take the shot, let the keeper work, and you never know what can happen
Sidwell said Marcus Rashford instead should have had a shot at goal and tested goalkeeper Mat Ryan.
“It falls from an error from Brighton’s point of view,” Sidwell said.
“He’s not really had a lot of the ball in the first half. Take the shot, you never know what could happen.
“Obviously it’s a tight angle, but take the shot, let the keeper work, and you never know what can happen.

“From a tight angle it can come off the post, it can take a deflection off the keeper.
“Yeah of course (I can understand Martial’s frustration), but you’ve got to give credit to the Brighton backline.
“They’ve regrouped well and got numbers back.”
Brighton won the game 1-0 thanks to a second-half header from Pascal Gross.
