Long-weekend beachgoers stuck in 75km delays on M1, Bruce Highway
Beachgoers hoping to escape for the long weekend have been caught in 75 kilometres of combined delays on the M1 and Bruce Highway on Saturday.
The congestion started about 10am and "was getting worse every hour" before it peaked about 1pm, according to Australian Traffic Network reporter Ben Mihan.
He said that at the height of the gridlock, southbound delays stretched between Eagleby and Molendinar for 40 kilometres, as well as a further 15 kilometres from Eight Mile Plains to Shailer Park.
Mr Mihan said at the same time that heavy traffic had clogged the Bruce Highway between Dakabin and Caboolture.
About an hour later, the congestion on both major motorways had reduced to 60 kilometres.
Mr Mihan said delays had eased to about 30 kilometres between Ormeau and Molendinar on the M1 as well as another 15 kilometres from Robina to Palm Beach.
About 15 kilometres of congestion remained to the Bruce Highway between Burpengary and Caboolture.
The congestion had only spanned a combined distance of 30 kilometres on both highways at midday.
The gridlock comes after traffic banked up bumper to bumper for more than 50 kilometres during the Friday evening peak-hour.
