Encounter a way to check rapes, says Raghuveera

APCC president N. Raghuveera Reddy is of the opinion that “encounter in one or two cases” will help check the growing incidents of rape.

Condemning the rape of a minor girl in Dachepalli, Mr. Reddy recalled an incident when Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was the Chief Minister, and said the accused in an acid attack in Warangal had been killed in an encounter within 24 hours when they tried to escape, and society had then supported it.

Such incidents did not recur during the Congress rule, he claimed at a press conference here on Friday.

Standing by his statement, Mr. Reddy said the government should act firmly.

“Incidents of rape are increasing, and no efforts are being made to check them,” he alleged.

There were over 10,000 incidents of rape in the last four years across the country, he said.

Accusing the State government of miserably failing to act firmly in such cases, Mr. Reddy said Andhra Pradesh stood sixth in the country in atrocities against women.

Such incidents seemed to be defying a solution if dealt with in a normal manner, he said.
