Former journalist passes away

P. Subramanyam, who worked for The Hindu in various capacities while based out of London, died there on Friday evening. He occasionally contributed reports, including to the sports pages. He was ailing for some time and died in hospital. He was 81.

Mr. Subramanyam was born in 1936 in Nandyal, went to school in Chennai, and graduated from Madras Christian College. He reached the U.K. in 1966 and served in the British Customs and Excise for an extended period. His association with The Hindu began in the 1980s.

He was a racing enthusiast, and a keen cricketer known for his leg-spin bowling. A generous host, he had a wide circle of friends, including in India.

He is survived by his daughter Sabrina.
