40 mins
Pickford lines up his wall as Southampton ponder what to do with another 35 yard free-kick. Tadic decides to shoot and drills it straight into the two-man wall. It's really quite in Goodison Park. There's no real energy coming from the crowd, they've been bored into accepting that this is how things must be.
Southampton attack quickly though and Coleman does superbly to read the path of a through-ball into Austin, blocking his shot inside the box. Great defending.
32 mins
Southampton still sitting deeper waiting for Everton to open up a bit and facilitate a counter-attack. Sam Allardyce teams don't really do that.
But suddenly space opens up for Soares to attack! He sprints forwards then crosses to nobody and Everton have the ball again. Lemina seems to have picked up a knock from somewhere.
29 mins
Tadic works room for a cross from wide right but Keane heads it away then boots the ball up the other end of the pitch. Southampton probing the deep Everton defence and Romeu's found space to shoot! He tries one, Pickford saves but parries it centrally and Austin almost gets on the end.
Everton stay composed and force Saints back.
10 mins
It's quiet here. Everton don't seem particularly adventurous, they're cautiously playing their way up the pitch, taking their time over passes and attacking wide areas. Vlasic crosses to the back post from wide left and Bolasie heads straight to the goalkeeper with absolutely no power on it.
8 mins
Bolasie sends a teasing cross into the area but Southampton clear their lines and run with the ball up to the Everton final third. Tadic is brought down by Schneiderlin and Saints take their time over the set piece. I fancy they won't be slowing down quite so much come the 80th minute of this one. Everton are so well organised the best chance you get against them is when they're in transition. That was one of those situations and Southampton opted to keep things safe instead.
5 mins
Davies has a chance to shoot from 25 yards and takes it while running away from goal. His shot is decent but wide of the far post. The goalkeeper knows it too and tucks his hand away to get a goal kick.
Bretrand finds space on the left wing but his cross to the back of the six yard box goes behind.
Glenn Hoddle on the eternal entertainment vs results debate
"They'd (Everton fans) definitely rather be in the Premier League! I don't understand what the fans here are on about. So did Stoke (want entertaining football)! So did West Brom, well not yet, but Stoke have gone down today. If there's a job spec there you do it. He had the same problem at West Ham, gone in done a job and then it's the style of football and all this.
"I think he should get the opportunity. Sam needs another year at least."
Sam Allardyce words
"Absolutely, last home game, full house, all sold out and try to keep the home record going. Our problems this week are unfortunate, Gylfi, Dominic, Wayne with his knee, Theo with his calf.
"The situation for us is we have to contain Southampton, we have to be the team to score the first goal today. They'll take chances, it's a little different than a normal game because of the situation they're in. Our system has to function better than theirs."
No Rooney or Walcott
Why could this be? Walcott suggested a couple of weeks ago that Allardyce and Wenger were on 'different levels' which might not have sat well with the man in charge but I'm not sure what the reason for Rooney's absence could be. It's not as if they need to be rested or anything. Hopefully Big Sam will clear that up later by saying they 'picked up a knock' or something else which almost certainly doesn't reveal what's going on.
Hello!
Welcome one and all to our liveblog for Everton - the masters of not being particularly entertaining - and Southampton - even worse. Southampton need to win to give themselves hope of surviving the harsh waters of the Premier League but Sam Allardyce will be extremely keen for his players to put on a show and earn him some respite from criticism.
It's an absolutely lovely day at Goodison Park, as you can tell from this photograph of a bus stop:
Team news should be with us at 4:30pm, at which point we can work out how both managers will approach this one. Southampton have to get the balance right - attack is essential but they can't do it and leave the defence exposed.
Hughes has opted for a three man defence in his last few matches and it hasn't really worked. Everton have some decent players and should be doing a lot better than they are. Oh the pressure!
