D'Marcus Adams has already earned a spot on the podium at the FHSAA track and field championships. On Saturday, he'll look to do it again, and perhaps bring home the gold in his signature event.
The Mainland senior and Florida State football signee placed third in the Class 3A boys long jump, with a best mark of 22 feet, 5.25 inches. Adams also qualified for a pair of individual track finals, to be held Saturday, the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash.
Adams won his preliminary heat in the 110 hurdles by daylight with a time of 14.11 seconds. At regionals, he clocked the second-fastest time in the nation this year (13.82).
Only four local athletes advanced beyond prelims on the track Friday — Adams, Mainland senior Steffan Mallory, Flagler Palm Coast senior Namiah Simpson and Atlantic senior Jason Axon.
Mallory, who claims offers from The Citadel and Arkansas State, qualified for the finals in two events, taking sixth in the 400 (48.38) and eighth in the 200 (22.02).
Simpson ran seventh in the 4A girls 300 hurdles (44.50), while Axon claimed the ninth and final spot in 2A boys 400 (48.85). Spruce Creek's Nathan Farrell missed out on the 4A boys 300 hurdles final by just 15 hundredths of a second (38.78).
Only two track events wrapped up on Friday — the 800 and 3,200-meter runs. Three local runners earned spots on the podium.
New Smyrna Beach's Aidan O'Gorman (9:38.82) and Father Lopez's Claire McDonnell (11:41.43) each took sixth in their respective 3,200 races. Matanzas junior Jacob Miley crossed the line eighth in the 3A 800 (1:56.41).
In the field, DeLand's Jiya Hastings capped off an impressive freshman campaign with a sixth-place showing in the 4A girls long jump. Hastings' best effort was 17 feet, 9 inches. Junior thrower Amberleigh Sauer also fared well for the Bulldogs, scoring top-12 showing in both the discus (115 feet, 1 inch) and the shot put (38 feet, 3.5 inches, a personal record).
David Long scored for Atlantic with a seventh-place finish in the Class 2A boys high jump (6 feet, 3.5 inches), while also taking ninth in the long jump (21 feet, 10 inches).
The second day of competition begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, on the campus of the University of North Florida.
