Labour have failed to make the big breakthrough in London that many were predicting as key targets Wandsworth, Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea all remain under Tory control.

Meanwhile there is relief for Theresa May as her party performed relatively well, gaining Peterborough and Basildon thanks to a near total wipeout in Ukip support, and also taking the London borough of Barnet.

However the Conservatives also lost control of Trafford which was the only Tory held council in Greater Manchester.

Elsewhere the Lib Dems have had a good night, retaking control of Richmond in London from the Conservatives, and gaining a number of seats around the country.
