Bail for SI: HC seeks views of the State

The Kerala High Court on Friday sought the views of the State government in response to a bail plea made by former Varapuzha police station sub-inspector G.S. Deepak arrested and remanded in custody in connection with the alleged custodial death of Sreejith.

According to his petition, he had not committed the offence alleged against him. He pointed out that the information given by Sreejith when he was admitted in a private hospital revealed that he was assaulted by two unidentifiable police officers in civil clothes just outside his house using their hands and feet.

Sreejith had not stated anything against the petitioner. Nor was any complaint about injury being sustained when he was inside the police station or inside the lock-up. The circle inspector was responsible for the investigation of the case and arrest of Sreejith. The petitioner had no role in the investigation of the case, he said.

He pointed out that the investigation of the case was almost over and the police had already questioned him. Therefore, no further detention of the petitioner was necessary.

Meanwhile, a writ petition filed by the family of Sreejith seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case was posted for hearing after the vacation holidays of the court.
