9 die in rain-related incidents in Telangana


Hyderabad: Nine people died in rain-related incidents in Telangana, the government said today a day after unseasonal showers accompanied by strong winds lashed some parts of the state.

“We have received reports from various districts that nine persons died yesterday in rain related incidents. Out of the nine, two deaths have been confirmed due to thunderbolts,” Commissioner for Disaster Relief R V Chandravadan said.

The respective district collectors would examine and certify the exact cause of the death of the other seven persons so that they would be eligible for ex-gratia paid by the government in such natural calamities, he told PTI here.


Besides the casualty, the unseasonal summer rain coupled with strong winds that hit some parts of the state yesterday also caused damage to crops.

In some parts of the capital city, water logging was witnessed while over 100 trees uprooted by the strong winds fell on roads, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials said.

The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee demanded that the state governmentextend immediate financial to the rain-hit farmers.

TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said lakhs of quintals of paddy, maize and other farm produce which were brought to market yards for sale were damaged causing heavy loss of crores of rupees.

“Farmers have suffered extensive damage due to loss of standing crops in many parts of the state,” he said.

The state government should conduct enumeration of losses by sending officials to affected regions so as to seek central relief, he said.
